Mundy

Shuffle

Mundy returned with his 5th studio album in May, 2011. Shuffle was recorded over a year at various bunkers, this is Mundy’s love song to his favourite American songwriters.

Mundy has released two singles from ‘Shuffle’. The first single a Paul Westerberg song ‘It’s A Wonderful Lie’ and the second ‘Reconsider Me’ a duet with the wonderful Gemma Hayes both are available to download from www.mundy.ie.

“This record was a pleasure to make and I wanna thank all of the great writers of these songs for inspiring me, leading me and guiding me in my career through darkness and light.” Mundy

Rock of Ages Gillian Welch / David Rawlings
When I first heard Gillian Welch, I bought nearly everything she recorded. Me and my friends ‘El Mush’ used to sing this ‘religiously’ in my parents bar.

It’s A Wonderful Lie Paul Westerberg
I played this song on repeat after myself and Epic Records parted company. It is so honest and capsulates what it is like in this temperamental industry. Suicaine Gratification is the album and is a ‘must have’.

Painbirds Mark Linkous
I was supposed to tour with Sparklehorse in ‘96 but Mark Linkous got ill. I went and bought the Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot album and got addicted. This song is so simple but beautifully haunting and enchanting.

Drunken Angel Lucinda Williams
I bought this album (Car Wheels On  A Gravel Road) impulsively and had no idea what I was getting myself into. Lucinda Williams restocked my shelves with love and hope as a songwriter and I even got to open for her. A Very attractive singer songwriter!

Reconsider Me (w/Gemma Hayes) Warren Zevon
I am a drifter, so if Bob Dylan or Neiler or Lucinda say a certain thing about something that rocks their boat, I’m on it. Warren Zevon makes Kurt Cobain seem like a boyscout. And I love Kurt Cobains songs. Actually the Irish D.J and singer Tom Dunne completely instigated this collaboration between Gemma and I.

Buckets of Rain Bob Dylan
I love the lyrics and the picking. I think it’s similar to what I do as a song. Someone will probably give me a headache for saying that!

Juanita Gram Parsons/Chris Hillman
I heard this first on a Gram Parsons tribute album-bought the original. It (the tribute) is a dark jewel and Emmylou Harris was heavily-heavenly involved. If you stay in hotel rooms as part of your job-you might recognise a ghost in this song.

Looks Like I’m Up Shit Creek Again Tom Waits
I became a huge Tom Waits obsessive in my late teens. I even bought the 2 ‘early years’ editions. This song made me chuckle but it is really a serious love song with a bit of a ‘fuck it! it’s broken’ attitude.

Angel from Montgomery John Prine
I have to thank Timmy Fogarty, who is blessed with a ‘true’ voice for teaching me this song. I only really know Timmy’s version but I know that John Prine who wrote it is a king songwriter.

Ohio Neil Young
This I heard first on Neil Youngs ‘decade’ collection. Neil makes me feel that I can play the guitar and communicate and be honest in my emotions. I love this song and Emm Gryner actually made me learn it. Nice one Emm!

Dirty Old Egg-Suckin’ Dog Cowboy Jack H. Clement
I heard Johnny Cash singing this on ‘live at Folsom prison’. It makes me laugh.  I love that some old man wrote a song about that rogue of a dog.

Kathy’s Song Paul Simon
Myself, Timmy, Mac, Stephen, Nicky and Roesy used play this in my parent’s pub. Sunday nights full of stout and song. The difference of a Sunday night crowd. All ears and sensitive. ‘The hair of the dog’ all blessed from mass and creamy pints and this gem of a song. Only wish that it were Ireland where his heart lay.

Peach Pickin Time in Georgia Jimmy Rodgers and Clayton McMichen
I musta did a million guitar takes of this song. Keith Farrell deserves so much credit on this album but this song must have broke his nuts. This song is an anti depressant and I adore you Jimmy Rogers for it.

Lost on the River Hank Williams
I heard Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris sing this on ‘Timeless’ a tribute to Hank Williams’. This is the one of the most sorrowful songs in my knowledge of song. Hank Williams holds the throne.

Mundy is touring Ireland with his band The Painbirds.
