“Florence-minus-the-hollering, stomping stage routine hinting at a feisty little madam beneath the adorable, heavy fringe-adorned veneer, promising a new starlet in the making” – Q magazine
“Amazing” – Tom Robinson, BBC Radio 6
“Armed only with a ukulele and a gorgeous voice, songbird Liz Lawrence is one of the hottest new troubadours around”. Hot Press, January 2012
“..People realized that they were witnessing something very special in Liz Lawrence. An organic songstress able to grab an unsuspecting crowd in the palm of her hand with only an acoustic guitar as her accomplice” – Paul O’Donnell, the white board project.
Ever since Liz Lawrence discovered the guitar she was determined to make acoustic music an exciting, fresh and honest genre. Playing in punk and ska bands as a guitarist in her early teens, she finally managed to take the mic and found herself entranced and engaged in a full blown love affair with live performance. Liz’s punk history may not be obvious on first impressions but once she starts to march on the stage her fiery and precocious nature cannot be suppressed.
Coming from Irish blood on her mother’s side the house was always full of music, her Grandparents being her earliest influence, her Grandmother as her piano teacher and Grandfather who played an assortment of folk instruments including the fiddle and accordion. Later opting for an against the grain art education in rural Devonshire, over the desire to move to the big city, she found solitude and time aided the development of carefully sculpted songs with melody hooks that are instant but sensitive and lyrics that talk to her listeners with honesty and compassion. In this secluded environment Liz began writing what was to become her debut album “Bedroom Hero”. The album was recorded with young producer Tim Ross, son of highly talented song writer Christy Hennessy. Liz’s honest approach to “old-fashioned song writing” was fully supported in the studio by Tim Ross, their working relationship led to a record that is colourful and earnestly heartfelt.
Liz has supported artists such as; Scouting for Girls, Xavier Rudd, Ben Howard, Brooke Fraser, Young the Giant, Yoav, The Civil Wars and one of her idols Ani Difranco, who commented on Liz as “a beautiful artist who lives on the edge”.
Following on from the release of her debut single the Oo Song last November, Liz will release Bedroom Hero her second single on 9 March followed by her album of the same name on 30 March.
Liz Lawrence will play her first Irish headline show upstairs in Whelan’s on Wednesday 11 April.
