The Hot 8 Brass Band

The Hot 8 Brass Band are an original bonfide marching brass band from the city of New Orleans, who most recently featured in series 2 of ‘Treme’ as both actors and performers. Founded by Bennie Pete, Jerome Jones, and Harry Cook, The Hot 8 have been playing traditional New Orleans brass band music professionally since 1995. They have played in traditional Second Line parades hosted each Sunday by a Social Aid and Pleasure Club ever since.

They are famous for playing all day in the sun, then hopping to a club gig and playing through the night. But even more than their boundless energy, what makes the Hot 8 special are the sounds they coax from their well-loved, well-worn horns. They became known nationwide following Hurricane Katrina having been featured on CNN, Nightline, in the New York Times, and most notably in Spike Lee’s Katrina documentary “When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts”.

The band have been heavily involved in relief initiatives following Hurricane Katrina, most notably Finding Our Folk and Save Our Brass, two grass-roots project that has brought music and instruments to shelters, temporary trailer parks, and communities across the Gulf Coast.

The Hot 8 have most recently appeared at The Apollo with Dr. John, Lou Reed, Nicolas Payton and others for the annual Great Day in Harlem. The Hot 8 have released three critically acclaimed recordings and are featured on the latest Blind Boys of Alabama recording on Time-Life Records.

Kings Go Forth (Luaka Bop Records)

The American music underground is having what you might call a Kings Go Forth moment. Need proof? Over the past 3 years, their seven inch singles and album The Outsiders set the soul blogs swooning and became instant collector’s items.

Legendary producer Tom Moulton called them to remix one of their songs. DJ Shadow’s playing them too. “Imaginary soul superstar” Mingering Mike is doing their album cover – the first time he has ever created art for a recording that actually exists! Then there’s the Funny or Die clip “High Five Inauguration” which features a KGF soundtrack and has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times. And the documentary ‘Super Noble Brothers’ about KGF founder Andy Noble and his brothers Davey and Tommy that was eight years in the making.

The story of Kings Go Forth starts with the aforementioned Andy Noble. He was born, raised and still lives in Milwaukee, and probably knows more about classic soul, funk, and R&B than anyone you’ve ever met. He’s a dedicated record collector, an independent label entrepreneur, and the proprietor of the fabled Lotus Land record shop. Andy co-founded KGF with Black Wolf, an immensely talented singer and writer who has performed around Milwaukee since the 1970s. The two met in Andy’s record shop circa 2004, and since then have assembled a powerhouse ten-piece soul unit consisting of seven players and three singers that is simply one of the most thrillingly creative new bands to be heard, in any genre, in the U.S.A. today.

There is power in KGF’s multi-ethnic makeup, in their 25 year age span, and in their unforced command of the soul music idiom. And to date, the soul revival has not produced another band with a vocal blend so rich in tone and feeling.

For the price of one show treat yourself to bonafide brass fresh from streets of New Orleans and unadulterated nothern soul and funk straight from the heart of America.
