The dynamic and uplifting music event Green Fire Islands premieres in Dublin’s Helix Theatre for one night only on Friday July 20th. This unique and ambitious stage show tells the tale of two very different warrior cultures – Maori and Irish – and makes a brief visit to Irish shores before heading to the UK to be part of the Cultural Olympiad, the official curtain raiser for the Olympic Games.

Green Fire Islands features the cream of Irish and Maori music makers and performers including musical director Steve Cooney, vocalist Iarla O’Lionaird, fiddler Nollaig Casey, New Zealand soul diva Whirimako Black, world acclaimed taonga puoro player Richard Nunns and a host of Irish and New Zealand musicians, vocalists, dancers and storytellers.

Green Fire Islands is an exciting and unique live collaboration that merges ancient and modern Maori with old and new Irish, in music, song, dance and poetry, an incredible evening of entertainment.

The first production of Green Fire Islands was in March 2008 in New Zealand. The concept of bringing the two cultures of Ireland and New Zealand/Maori together, which was previously untested, was an outstanding success. Green Fire Islands was the headline act on the main stage on opening night of Womad 2008 and a favourite of critics at the New Zealand International Festival of the Arts where it played at the Michael Fowler Centre. It also performed at the Aotea Centre on St Patrick’s Day, at which the Finn brothers, Hinewehi Mohi, Anika Moa, Anna Coddington and King Kapisi performed as surprise guests. A documentary film of Green Fire Islands is currently in production.
