Janis Ian
Legendary American musician & author
announces three Irish dates this January
Janis Ian is one of the true legendary American musicians, born of the colourful eras of the 60’s and 70’s, who continues to produce an astounding body of work to this day.
Having started early, her first composition ‘Hair Spun of Gold’ published at age 12, Janis’ career has continued to flourish for over 50 years. In that time Janis has written and recorded a multitude of hits, which have been covered by artists as diverse as Mel Torme and Cher, such as ‘Jesse’, ‘Stars’ and ‘At Seventeen’; the latter of which earned her five Grammy nominations in 1975 of which she won the Grammy for ‘Best Pop Vocal performance’. Janis has received nine Grammy nominations in total!
She has recorded a staggering 30 studio albums, while simultaneously producing a host of short stories, science fiction novels, and songs for film and television. Janis also runs a foundation, in her mother’s name, which helps to raise scholarship funding for those wishing to return to college. Ella Fitzgerald called her ‘The best young singer in America’, Chet Atkins said ‘Singer? You ought to hear that girl play guitar; she gives me a run for my money!” and reviewers around the globe have showered Janis with high accolades as they continue to become mesmerised by her passionate, powerful performances.
In 2008 Janis released ‘Societies Child; My Autobiography’; a detailed account of her life in the music industry, both harrowing and uplifting at once. From parties with Jimmy Hendrix, to death threats, to losing love and finding it again, the autobiography gave the world a vivid insight into the explosive life that Janis has lead since childhood. Throughout the rollercoaster it is clear that one thing has remained steadfast, and that is Janis’ devotion to producing music that will continue to permeate and enthral generation after generation.
